Micro-cement is a thin coating, usually two to three millimeters per coat, made from cement blended with polymer resins and mineral pigments, troweled on in multiple layers directly over an existing floor. Unlike poured concrete, it needs no structural depth and can go straight over tile, timber, or an old concrete slab, which has made it a popular renovation material precisely because it avoids demolition.
The finish's biggest selling point is continuity: because it's troweled rather than laid in units, a micro-cement floor has no grout lines and no seams, and can run without a break from a kitchen into an adjoining living room or even up a wall as a matching baseboard-free skirting, a level of visual continuity that tile can't achieve.
There's no grout line to clean and no transition strip to trip over — that's the whole appeal in two sentences.
Application is skilled and multi-stage: a primer coat for adhesion, two base coats of the pigmented micro-cement itself, hand-sanded between coats, and a protective sealer on top, usually a polyurethane or epoxy topcoat that determines most of the finished floor's durability and resistance to scratching.
That sealer is also the material's main maintenance consideration. Micro-cement itself is porous and would stain readily without it, so the topcoat needs periodic reapplication — typically every few years in high-traffic areas — to keep the floor's water and stain resistance intact.
Because the material is applied by hand in a live environment rather than manufactured under factory conditions, no two micro-cement floors are ever perfectly identical, a variability that some clients love for its handmade character and others find harder to approve from a sample chip alone.
