Hempcrete is a mix of the woody core of the hemp plant, called hurd, bound with a lime-based binder, cast or sprayed into wall cavities as insulation rather than as a structural material — it has almost no load-bearing capacity and is always paired with a timber or steel frame. What it offers instead is a combination of decent thermal performance and genuinely useful moisture management.
Unlike closed-cell foam insulation, hempcrete is vapor-permeable, meaning it allows moisture to pass through and evaporate rather than trapping it inside a wall cavity. In a well-detailed wall assembly, that permeability significantly reduces the risk of trapped moisture and mold, a real and recurring failure mode in tightly sealed synthetic-insulated walls.
It doesn't just resist heat loss — it manages moisture the way a synthetic insulation never will.
The material also carries a genuinely unusual carbon story: hemp sequesters carbon as it grows, and the lime binder absorbs additional carbon dioxide as it cures over the following months and years, meaning a hempcrete wall can continue drawing down carbon well after construction is complete rather than simply holding a fixed embodied footprint.
Application is either cast in place using temporary formwork, similar to rammed earth, or sprayed directly into a wall cavity against a permanent formwork left in place — spraying is faster and increasingly the more common method on residential projects, though it requires specialized equipment and a trained crew.
Cure time is the material's biggest practical drawback: hempcrete needs weeks to months to fully cure and dry before finishes can go on, which makes it a harder sell on a tight construction schedule, even for builders otherwise sold on its performance and carbon profile.
