Weathering steel, commonly known by the trade name Corten, is designed to do something most cladding materials are engineered to avoid: rust. The alloy forms a stable oxide layer that protects the steel underneath from further corrosion, and in the process turns a deep orange-brown that, on this site above a red-rock canyon outside Boulder, was chosen specifically to match the surrounding sandstone within a season or two.
The panels arrived from the fabricator in a raw grey-green mill finish and were installed dry, with no coating at all. Within the first six weeks of exposure to Colorado's dry-then-wet spring, they'd already started freckling with rust bloom; by the end of the first winter the color had evened out into the deep russet the architects had shown the clients in renderings.
Nobody paints Corten. The whole point is that the weather finishes the job the mill started.
Detailing weathering steel correctly means designing for the runoff. Rust-stained water will streak anything porous beneath it, so the architects specified a drip edge at every horizontal joint and kept the stone foundation walls set back from the steel's water path. Get that detail wrong and a beautiful material becomes a maintenance headache within a year.
Inside, the same steel returns as a fireplace surround and a stair stringer, unifying the palette without repeating the exterior literally. The architects were careful not to overuse it — too much Corten indoors reads industrial rather than warm, so it's confined to two load-bearing moments and left alone everywhere else.
Five years in, the owners say the biggest surprise wasn't the color, which behaved exactly as promised, but how little the facade has needed since: no repainting, no recoating, just an occasional rinse to clear pine needles from the drip edges.
